Transport Chicago 2023
Call for Proposals

Call for Proposals

Do you have a passion for transportation and mobility? Are you interested in expanding your perspective among a wider variety of backgrounds? Do you have knowledge, experience or skills to share? Transport Chicago invites professionals and practitioners, researchers and academics, and activists and organizers to submit a proposal for our 38th Annual Conference on Friday, June 16th, 2023 at voco Chicago Downtown. The one-day conference will feature presentations, sessions, and posters on transportation issues from academics, public and private sector practitioners, and advocates.

We are now taking proposals for individual presentations, sessions or workshops, and posters. Please use the form below to submit your 250-word proposal by 11:59pm CT on Sunday, April 16th. Submitters will be informed of their selection by Friday, April 21st.
Types of Proposals

1. Individual Presentation – A 15-minute presentation on a topic of your choice. Individual proposals will be grouped into 1-hour, moderated panels curated by the conference steering committee. Individuals seeking to present with other specific speakers should submit a Full Session (option 2 below).

2. Full Session/Workshop - Present on a topic of your choice for the full hour-long session. Examples of sessions include:
  • Multiple presentations from a team of colleagues wishing to present together
  • A one-hour workshop with discussion topics or feedback activities
  • Walking tour accessible from the conference venue
While the format for this option is open-ended, Transport Chicago strongly recommends submissions include multiple speakers, in addition to the criteria listed below, as submissions will be evaluated on their ability to utilize the full- time allotment. Unlike an Individual Presentation, Transport Chicago will not add speakers or otherwise curate this session and will evaluate the proposal as submitted. While the submitted panel can include multiple speakers, please only submit one proposal; submission should also identify a point of contact if multiple speakers are included. It is the responsibility of the proposer to secure
commitments from all included speakers prior to June 16th.

3. Poster – Present your research or project using a physical display. Posters will be displayed for the duration of the conference and will be featured in a 1-hour poster session.

4. Other Idea - Do you have an alternative concept that isn't captured by these three categories? Let us know what your idea is!
Submission Guidelines

All proposals must be submitted through our online portal. Please present your idea in a concise, informative proposal of no more than 250 words. Relevance to the Chicago region is encouraged though not required. All topics will be considered, and proposals for non-traditional presentations are welcomed.

Proposals must contain the following components:
  • Research Topic/Problem Statement
  • Research Methods/Project Approach
  • Findings and Conclusions, focusing on lessons learned.

Proposals will be reviewed on the following content:
  • Inclusion of the three identified components
  • Presentation style, including grammar and syntax
  • Timeliness/relevance of topic

On the proposal form, presenters are asked to provide two learning objectives, describing what they would like the audience to learn from the presentation.

Example: “Participants will learn about the planning, financing, marketing, and operation of a public-private shuttle bus service that provides a viable transit option for travel to suburban employment centers.”

Additionally, presenters should describe information and insights that audience members will be able to apply in professional practice.

Example: “Participants may be able to adapt elements of the shuttle bus program to meet transportation needs in their own communities.”

Following the conference, presenters will be required to submit presentation slides or a workshop summary (PowerPoint or PDF) to be posted on the Transport Chicago website. Although not required, presenters may choose to upload a paper to be posted on the website.
Submission Statement on Conference Diversity

Diversity in the transportation community is critical as practitioners strive to develop equitable mobility improvements and understand the needs of all users in our region. Our goal at Transport Chicago is to ensure that the ideas and perspectives presented at the conference are inclusive of all backgrounds, demographics, and perspectives. To that end, we encourage proposals from anyone and everyone with a proposal related to transportation and land use planning and engineering.
